Beyond the divide by kathryn lasky5/29/2023 I was expecting somewhat of a challenge to be made against their highly unethical practices. Killing innocent wolf pups in the name of genetic purity is on the same level as killing one of your own to eat, in my opinion. It irked me to no end that Clans of wolves were considered "noble" as opposed to the cannibals living on the outskirts. The other issue I have is that the way the society of wolves was portrayed. It started to pick up around the end, but it was too little too late for me. It didn't help that the main character doesn't have that much of a personality. The beginning was very exciting, but the first two parts were uninteresting. The first one is that it is horribly dull. There were two main issues I had with this book. I had enjoyed what I had read of Lasky's Ga'hoole series, and I was expecting this to be comparable in quality to that. I was really surprised that I didn't like this one. The Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan5/27/2023 Sagan explores the factors that contributed to the development of human intelligence. However, he also emphasizes the importance of understanding this relationship to enhance human intellectual potential. He acknowledges the complexity of determining the relationship between genetics and intelligence, as both nature (genetic inheritance) and nurture (environmental influences) shape our cognitive abilities. Sagan turns his attention to genetics, examining the role that genes play in the development of intelligence. In humans, the neocortex is significantly larger than in other animals, which has facilitated our advanced intellectual capabilities. Finally, the neocortex, the most advanced part of the brain, is responsible for higher cognitive functions, such as language, abstract thought, and problem-solving. The limbic system, which governs emotions, emerged later and is shared by most mammals. The reptilian brain, responsible for basic survival functions, is the oldest part of the brain. These parts evolved in succession, each building on the capabilities of its predecessor. He discusses the triune brain theory, which posits that our brains are composed of three main parts: the reptilian brain, the limbic system, and the neocortex. In this section, Sagan delves into the development of the brain, tracing its evolution from simple organisms to the complex human brain we have today. |
